Joos van de Plas; Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, eine Entdeckungsreise neuerlebt, 2013
'Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, eine Entdeckungsreise neuerlebt' was published for the exhibition 'Second Life' by Joos van de Plas in Museum Wiesbaden. It opens with an essay by art historian Michael van Hoogenhuyze. In the book, written in English and German, Van de Plas reports how a casual visit to Museum Wiesbaden's Gerning Collection developed into a five-year project. Using modified reproductions from Maria Sibylla Merian's 'Metamorphosis InsectorumSurinamensium' (1705) and transparent overlays, Van de Plas displays her method of determining whether certain dried insects in the Gerning Collection could have been the actual models for the engravings in Merian's 'Metamorphosis'. Joos van de Plas' research makes the supposition that part of this venerable collection came indeed from Merian significantly more probable.
