Anouk Kruithof; PLAYING BORDERS this contemporary state of mind, 2009
"Playing borders, this contemporary state of mind" 2009 is a fictional photographic picture-essay, where Anouk Kruithof imagines the 'doomsday scenario' of the emotional "state of being" of man in Western society. An abandoned office building in Rotterdam, the Netherlands was the decor and unknown people from around the office were invited to act anonymously in Kruithof’ s images. Kruithof breathes new life into the materials she found in the office, through processing peculiar temporary installations and spatial interventions out of it. The people respond to the situations and they make a nervous, uncomfortable impression. A sense of anomie and absurd nature is visible, which is read as a metaphor for the tormented man in today's Western society. Anouk Kruithof works in a poetic and conceptual way, and she weaves photography, installation and performance together. Installation is usually the presentation form in both the exhibition space as in the artist's book and within this she calls a strong physical experience.
