Visiting Versailles et les Trianons, 2013
As s starting point for the series Visiting Versailles et les Trianons (2008-2009) I used a deluxe tourist guide from the early 20th century, which I found in Frido Troost’s most miraculous and inspiring Institute for Concrete Matter in Haarlem (NL).
This guide was illustrated with coloured-in black and white photographs of Versailles and the Trianons. Seeking a contrast with this palace, which in a sense is synonymous with decadence, I combined the sugary coloured-in pictures from the guide-book with black and white photographs from the catalogues of World Press Photo. The tourist guide photographs serve as background to details cut out of the black and white press photos, which I afterwards coloured in using the same pastel tints. In this way, I created new photographic images that seduce with their colours as they repel with their representation.
The 25 collages in this book are hand-made and reproduced in their actual size.
